Up here in Hartlepool, we are preparing to host our own big race on May 6; the race for the Parliamentary constituency seat in the local by-election. More than anything, Hartlepudlians want to be represented by people that truly understand the town and its needs, not by someone that just pretends to. Well, I can categorically state that my fellow monkey hangers are extremely politically savvy.
Hartlepool is next on their hit list. Starmer's Labour party offering is a far cry from the expectations of many staunch, traditionalist Labour supporters here and it will be interesting to see whether this stable can fulfil its expectations as the race favourite.
However, that wall has been crumbling in recent years and the Conservatives have been winning seats that were ly unwinnable. As the race hots up, it is becoming increasingly difficult to pick a winner. I heard a stable whisper earlier this week that could turn out to be quite telling; a Labour party activist was out campaigning and said that at least under Jeremy Corbyn, he knew exactly where the party wanted to go and could easily explain it to punters on the doorstep.
This race will, of course, be decided by the good people of Hartlepool and if any of the candidates underestimate their electorate, they do so at their own peril. It was probably easier to pick the winner of the National. Stuart Drummond is the former three-time mayor of Hartlepool.

As for where my money will be going, I personally think it is too close a race to call at the moment. If one of the candidates can convince the electorate they possess these qualities, they will be well on the way to the winning post. That said, the Conservative Tees Valley Mayor is galloping ahead in the polls and looks set to be re-elected at a canter. In Hartlepool, strange things can happen in elections, even the outsiders have a chance!
Whoever wins this upcoming by-election, as long as they work their backside off for the town, could be there for a long time to come. However, after years of poor Council leadership, the public wanted a change. It is by no means just a two-horse race either, there are a few candidates for some of the smaller parties that have shown form and even local business owner, Samantha Lee, an Independent candidate could be worth a flutter. Although they are making themselves favourites, I don't see the Conservatives as certainties in any way. It is Sir Keir Starmer's first by-election since he became club and he was in the town recently, supporting their candidate, a GP who has been working on the front line in the local hospital, during the pandemic. They don't necessarily want a thoroughbred, what they do want is a Parliamentary representative that will fight tooth and nail on their behalf and someone that will do it with dignity and common sense.
